Mister Muffler preventative maintenance tips To Filter or Not to Filter, That is the Question
It has been only a few weeks (in some cases perhaps only days) since you took your car to your Mister Muffler dealer for its tune-up.
You of course started by having your tires changed and then you made sure that the mechanic changed your motor oil. You finished by having the multi-point inspection done and you went home, your mind at ease. And with good reason.
But other than this semi-annual check-up that your car goes through, do you do a little preventative maintenance? For example, how long has it been since you have checked the different filters that help your car give you such good performance?
I won't get into a long explanation here. In a broad sense, a filter, no matter the filter, has one role to play: to filter out impurities and prevent them from circulating in the system itself. However, each of the four main filters in your car has a precise role to play and these are worth looking at.
Since you car has just been inspected and had the oil changed, your oil filter is probably brand new too. And it is a good thing because the over use of a used oil filter can have negative efects on your car.
The oil filter filters and blocks scale, soot, metal and dust in the lubrication system.
The oil filter is an essential part in preserving your motor. It filters and blocks scale, soot, metal and dust in the lubrication system. If these particles manage to make it to the mechanical systems they automatically cause premature wear of the mechanical parts. Result: your car will be more polluting and performance will be reduced.
The way the oil filter works is simple. It is nothing but a cylinder and a paper cartridge with a special coating inside. Through a chemical process, this coating, along with the many folds in the paper, block and retain potentially harmful particles. But the filter has it limits and when it is worn, it no longer works properly. This is why good maintenance is important.
The new wave of ecological filters allows us, however, to see it in a different way . Of course we have to continue to have rigorous inspections and to be sure to change the filter when it is too charged with impurities. But new manufacturing techniques let you keep the metal casing which helps to protect the components of the filter. With just one more twist, the paper cartridge can be removed. All you need do then is replace the paper cartridge.
Aside from reducing the amount of waste metal, this type of filter also allows us to recycle the paper which, once it has been cleaned, can be destroyed with no risk to the environment.
The only rule that must be respected: always follow your specialist's or the manufacturer's instructions regarding the strict standards that must be followed in the type of filter used. Making the incorrect choice for your filter can have even more serious consequences on your motor since this it may allow more impurities through which may cause permanent damage to your motor.
In an upcoming edition, we will have a look at the other filters.
